Construction and Engineering

Skrine’s Construction and Engineering practice is one of the most established in Malaysia.

Our practice group is presently helmed by the well-known practitioners Ivan Loo, who has been commended as “very sharp and highly skilled in construction matters” (Chambers Asia-Pacific) and Ashok Ranai, who has extensive experience in construction, infrastructure and energy project disputes as lead counsel and as an arbitrator.

We act for a diverse clientele comprising public authorities, project owners, developers, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and operators.

We house “a mix of counsel with vast experience, skills and knowledge” (IFLR 1000), which enables us to offer a comprehensive and integrated range of services spanning the entire project lifecycle, from front-end advisory and drafting to contract management and dispute resolution.

Our construction team routinely represents clients in disputes concerning commercial and residential developments, power plants, facilities, and utilities. They have been extensively involved in high-profile court cases, large and complex arbitrations, high-value adjudications, and mediations. Some of our lawyers are also qualified arbitrators, adjudicators, and mediators who frequently sit in such capacities.

In addition, we have a specialised non-contentious construction team, headed by Richard Khoo, that regularly acts for the various project stakeholders. The team is experienced in the drafting and negotiation of key documents such as tender documents, concession agreements, offtake and supply agreements, turnkey agreements, and operations and maintenance agreements. They also advise clients on procurement and contract administration.

We combine our in-depth knowledge and familiarity with various aspects of the construction industry to provide clients with practical solutions that are consistent with their unique requirements and commercial objectives. Our strong capabilities are recognised in the market, which is reflected in our consistent rankings in distinguished publications such as the Legal 500 Asia-Pacific and Chambers Asia-Pacific.
