Overview

Louise Azmi was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2004, and was in private practice as a Barrister in England for eleven years until relocating to Malaysia in 2016. She passed the Bahasa Malaysia Legal Qualifying Exam to be called as Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2019. 
 
Louise’s areas of practice in the UK were primarily criminal and environmental.  She has appeared as trial counsel involving serious and organised crime, including fraud and large- scale drug trafficking. She has also defended murder and manslaughter cases, including those with complex questions of causation and expert medical evidence. Louise has also regularly appeared before the English Court of Appeal.  Particularly noted for her abilities as an advocate, Louise was cited in the Legal 500 UK edition as “having achieved some frankly astonishing results”.
 
Since practising in Malaysia, Louise has been undertaking cases in various fields including commercial, construction, oil & gas and general civil litigation.
 
Louise is an arbitrator empanelled with Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (BICAM), Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC), and is on the Reserve Panel of Arbitrators at Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).  She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators (MIArb). She is also an Adjudicator (AIAC) and Mediator empanelled with Securities Industry Dispute Resolution Centre (SIDREC) and AIAC.

  • Advised China Company in relation to maritime claim where equipment was damaged at sea.

  • Adjudicator – AIAC.

  • Acted as arbitrator in construction claims.

  • Advised regarding strength of claim in respect Oil and Gas project with estimated claim value of US $300 million.

  • Prepared legal report and presented to board of GLC for major construction project. Advised in respect of strength of claim prior to initiation of arbitration.

  • Advised China Company in relation to action under health and safety regulations following fatalities at construction site. 

  • Advised construction company in relation to renegotiation of LRT3 Project.

  • Lead counsel at trial for large Malaysian construction company.
