A Roundtable Forum on International Arbitration

On 4 October 2022, Skrine organised a Roundtable Forum on International Arbitration which was held at the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, attended by Skrine’s clients from various organisations.

Our Senior Partner, To’ Puan Janet Looi, delivered the opening speech to welcome the speakers and the distinguished guests.

The event was graced with the presence of Y.A.M. Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, the Founding President of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), who delivered an insightful and thought-provoking keynote address. His Royal Highness’ keynote speech briefly covered the history of international arbitration as well as more recent trends including digital assets such as cryptocurrency and NFTs. His Royal Highness emphasised that international arbitration does not only benefit the parties to the arbitration, but also Malaysia more generally and that any increase in the use of Malaysian law overseas increases Malaysia's standing as a developed nation, as more stakeholders will see the efficiency and effectiveness of our laws.

During the roundtable session, our partner, Mr. Mubashir Mansor spoke together with Mr. Martin Polaine and Ms. Arvinder Sambei, both of whom are Senior Barristers at Brooke Chambers, United Kingdom and Mr. Tejus Chauhan, Director, South Asia, Arbitration & ADR, ICC International Court of Arbitration. The session was moderated by our Senior Associate, Ms. Anita Natalia. The speakers shared their insights on some of the key trends and issues in international arbitration in recent years, including third-party funding, potential risks in drafting of arbitration clauses and enforcement of awards. The forum ended with an open Q&A session during which the guests participated actively.

Skrine would like to express its profound gratitude to all the attendees for their support in making the event a successful one.
