KPUM’s Contract Drafting Workshop

On 2 July 2023, our Senior Associates Tan Wei Liang and Francine Ariel Paul were invited by the United Kingdom & Ireland Malaysian Law Students’ Union (KPUM) to speak as panel members in a workshop session attended by approximately 100 Malaysian law students at the launch of KPUM’s Contract Drafting Competition, a brand-new initiative introduced this year which seeks to provide law students with unique exposure to modern commercial contract drafting.

During the workshop, our lawyers provided valuable insights and beginner-friendly tips for effective contract drafting, including common issues and pitfalls in contract drafting, the types and variations of contracts in legal practice, contract language and structure, standard boilerplate provisions, effective means to streamline the contract review process, similarities and differences in contract drafting between Malaysia and other jurisdictions, and cross-border considerations when drafting contracts for foreign clients.

In addition, our lawyers emphasised the importance of commercial awareness in contract drafting, highlighting how a sound understanding of today’s dynamic business landscape can significantly enhance the practical relevance and efficacy of contractual agreements from a commercial perspective. Our lawyers also shared engaging personal anecdotes from legal practice, providing the audience with real-life context and a practical perspective of the topics discussed. The workshop ended with an interactive Q&A session.

Skrine would like to thank KPUM for organising, inviting, and collaborating with us for the workshop and the Contract Drafting Competition. We would also like to commend all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement in the recently concluded Contract Drafting Competition.
