Covid-19: Effects of the Movement Control Order on Court Proceedings *Update No.2*

As mentioned in our Alerts issued on 30 March 2020 and 13 April 2020, courts nationwide will continue to manage cases online in order to allow access to justice during the period when the Movement Control Order remains in force in Malaysia.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court issued a press release yesterday announcing that for the first time in Malaysian history, proceedings at the Court of Appeal will be live streamed on 23 April 2020. According to the press release, this initiative will enable the public to view the proceedings live and to ensure continued access to justice during this period.

The live broadcast will be conducted at 10.00 a.m. on 23 April 2020 via the Malaysian Judiciary official portal at www.kehakiman.gov.my.

According to the media, three appeals before the Court of Appeal will be live streamed.1

This initiative by the judiciary is a significant landmark in Malaysian history and is most welcomed as it will enable more cases to be disposed of while the Movement Control Order remains in force.

This Alert is prepared by Karen Tan Wee Sean (Associate) of Skrine.
