Skrine Meets Pertiwi Soup Kitchen 2019

On 15 February 2019, 25 members of the Skrine family volunteered their Friday night to help out with the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen.

We began at Lorong Medan Tuanku 2 (right opposite the Loke Mansion) before moving on to Jalan Hang Lekiu near Dataran Maybank. Food and drinks were provided to close to 600 Malaysians, of all ages and temperament, just looking for a bite and a hot cup of coffee to keep them going.

The tasks undertaken by the volunteers ranged from the pouring hundreds of cups of coffee and syrup to handing out hot meals and curry puffs to the beneficiaries. Various stations were set up to ensure that the distribution of food and drinks was carried out in an orderly manner. Skrine’s volunteers were rotated around the stations so that everyone got to try at least 2-3 different tasks, enabling us to appreciate what goes on behind the scenes at Pertiwi Soup Kitchen Volunteers. Our volunteers also had the opportunity to put their parenting skills to test, taking care of little kids who came to get a quick snack for their break while playing with their favourite toy.

In conjunction with Chinese New Year, a lion dance troupe was invited to make an appearance at the site to perform the traditional lion dance and hand out mandarin oranges to the crowd of enthralled onlookers as a symbol of good luck and happiness. The little kids were also very entertained, hopping and dancing to the rhythm.

We hope that everyone who attended had a pleasant and eye-opening experience.

This event was organised by Social Responsibility Unit of Skrine.
