Skrine x TFM: We Think Digital

As part of Skrine’s ongoing collaboration with Teach For Malaysia (“TFM”), our lawyers from the Intellectual Property and TMT practice, Gooi Yang Shuh and Cheam Tat Sean, were invited to speak at a workshop for TFM’s We Think Digital initiative, with the workshop focusing on personal data protection and intellectual property. The workshop, which was conducted on Saturday, 16 July 2022, was attended by 350 students between the ages of 13 and 17.

The workshop started off with a short presentation by Sean on the key principles of personal data protection, with a focus on the rights granted under local personal data protection laws. The objective was to teach the students how they can better manage their personal data and the permissions granted to companies and organizations regarding use of their personal data. Gooi then gave an engaging talk on intellectual property rights with a particular focus on copyright in social media, the aim of which was to educate the students about the rights they have to any content they post and the golden rule of sharing content online. Both Sean and Gooi also addressed a number of questions raised during the workshop.

We are glad to have received feedback that the students found the workshop to be enjoyable and helpful overall, with an average rating of 4.6 being given. It was great seeing the level of engagement and interest the students had during the workshop and we look forward to meeting them again!
