Covid-19: SOPs for environmental sector

On 1 May 2020, the Prime Minister of Malaysia announced that all businesses except those which are set out in the List of Prohibited Activities are permitted to operate from 4 May 2020 (‘MCO Phase 4’) subject to strict compliance with the standard operating procedures (‘SOP’) established by the relevant regulatory authorities. Our earlier Alert on MCO Phase 4 is available here.

The Ministry of Environment and Water had on the same day issued SOPs for the environmental sector (‘MEWA SOPs’).

The MEWA SOPs state that all businesses/ business activities under the environmental sector except those which are set out in the List of Prohibited Activities are permitted to operate subject to compliance with the health and safety measures issued by the National Security Council and Ministry of Health Malaysia. The List of Prohibited Activities does not include any activity relating to the environmental sector.

Although the MEWA SOPs set out SOPs for the disposal of clinical wastes and disposal of scheduled wastes from industrial premises as well as SOPs for the water supply subsector and sewerage services subsector, this Alert will only provide a summary (in the English language) of the salient points of the MEWA SOPs for the disposal of clinical wastes and disposal of scheduled wastes from industrial premises. Our summary is available here.
