Anti-party hopping law comes into force for Members of Dewan Rakyat of the Malaysian Parliament

The provisions of the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 3) Act 2022 (‘Amendment Act’) which amend the Federal Constitution to prevent political party hopping by Members of the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) of the Malaysian Parliament comes into operation today, 5 October 20221.
 
The provisions of the Amendment Act which seek to extend the anti-party hopping law to members of a State Legislative Assembly will come into operation in each State on such date as may be appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with the consent of the Ruler or the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, as the case may be, of the relevant State, by notification in the Gazette.
