According to the Minister, the adoption of Euro 5 petrol is expected to be fully implemented by 2027.
The lower sulphur content of Euro 5 petrol as compared to current fuel standards will result in cleaner exhaust emissions and is expected to significantly reduce air pollution.
The First Schedule of the Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Fuel Contents) Regulations 2007
2 (as amended by the Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Properties) (Amendment) Regulations 2021
3) stipulates,
inter alia, that commencing 1 September 2025, the maximum permitted sulphur and lead content of petroleum is 10 mg/kg and 0.005 g/l respectively.
The Euro 5 Diesel standards have been implemented in Malaysia since 1 April 2021. Our alert on this can be accessed

The phasing in of Euro 5 petrol is a welcomed step as the country implements various measures to reduce CO2 emissions in order to achieve its net zero emission target by 2050.
