Transaction News: Skrine advises Malaysia Airports on KLIA Aerotrain Replacement Project

Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn. Bhd. (‘Malaysia Airports’) recently entered into a new contract for the design, construction, testing and commissioning, and completion of the Aerotrain Replacement Project at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This will involve the delivery of three new trains and the upgrading of two lines.

The Aerotrain Replacement Project was previously awarded to Pestech Technology Sdn. Bhd. in 2022. Subsequently, there was a change in the project structure and a new project award was issued in January 2024 to Alstom Transport Systems (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (‘Alstom’), the original equipment manufacturer, and a joint venture consisting of IJM Construction Sdn. Bhd. and Pestech Technology Sdn. Bhd. (‘IJMC-Pestech JV’).

Pursuant to a new contract signed on 14 June 2024 between Malaysia Airports, Alstom and the IJMC-Pestech JV, the Aerotrain Replacement Project is scheduled to be completed by 31 January 2025, which will be two months ahead of the original planned completion date.

Skrine acted for Malaysia Airports in the transaction, with the team being led by our Projects & Infrastructure Partner, Richard Khoo, and supported by Senior Associate, Rachel Chiah.
