The Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (‘CIDB’) had on 7 May 2020 introduced initiatives to ease the burden of construction industry players affected by the Movement Control Order, a summary of which is available here. Subsequently, on 19 January 2021, CIDB announced that they are extending several of these initiatives, with the aim of easing the burden on contractors that intends to register or renew their registrations with CIDB.
 
Relaxation of Registration Renewal Requirements
 
Previously, CIDB outlined several exemptions in relation to the requirements for renewal of local contractor registrations, as follows:
 

The abovementioned exemptions, which were initially scheduled to end on 31 December 2020, will now be extended to 31 March 2021.
 
50% Deduction of CCD Points Required
 
In addition to the extension of the exemptions in relation to renewal of local contractor registrations, CIDB will implement a fifty percent (50%) deduction of the CCD points required for the renewal of local contractor registration¹. This deduction will take effect on 1 April 2021.
 
Comments
 
CIDB stated that their extension of the initiatives is pursuant to feedback from industry players that such initiatives are still necessary for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Movement Control Order. On that basis, it would seem that CIDB’s initiatives have indeed assisted industry players and the extension of such initiatives will likely be welcome news.
