Certification and Labelling Requirements for Engine Oil Deferred for Six Months

The requirement for suppliers of engine oil to obtain and display a certificate and conformity label in respect of engine oil under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicle) Order 2024 (“Order”) which was to have come into operation on 7 April 20251 has been deferred for six months and will come into effect on 7 October 2025.2

According to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the decision to postpone the enforcement of the Order was made after considering appeals and feedback from industry players and associations regarding technical difficulties in adhering to the Order, in particular, the challenges faced in selling off existing engine oil supplies that have already been distributed or are in the local market.

The Ministry added that once the postponement period ends, strict action will be taken against importers, distributors or traders who sell engine oil products without the requisite certification and labelling as prescribed under the Order.
