On 1 October 2011, Skrine hosted its inaugural Skrine Regatta at the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex. Themed "Paddling for Charity", the Skrine Regatta is Malaysia's first-ever corporate dragon boating event. It brought together corporate dragon boat teams from Bursa Malaysia, HSBC, KPMG, PwC and Skrine to compete for the Skrine Regatta Challenge Trophy and in the process, the teams raised RM25,000 for charity. After a close-fought race in the Grand Finals between Skrine, KPMG and HSBC, KPMG surged across the finishing line as champions.
Five dragon boat teams - Bursa Malaysia, HSBC, the KPMG Vikings, the Pirates of PwCea and the Skrine Dragons - converged on the waters of Putrajaya on 1 October 2011 to paddle for charity. Each of the teams had made a contribution of RM5,000 with the total of RM25,000 donated to the Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang Selangor (PKIK). The Chairman of PKIK, Augustine Benedict along with some of the children from PKIK were present at the Regatta to enjoy the day's festivities.
The Regatta is a dragon boat race covering 250 metres and each team consisting of 16 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. With the exception of the Skrine Dragons, all of the teams were newcomers to dragon boating, a sport which encourages teamwork and the spirit of camaraderie. In the lead up to the Regatta, the teams had practice sessions at the Putrajaya lake in order to prepare for the event. The weekend before the Regatta also had a team of professional trainers from SAVA, a Singaporean company dedicated to the sport of dragon boating, to coach the enthusiastic fledgling teams.
At the start of the Skrine Regatta, the teams were divided into two heats, with the winners of each heat heading straight into the Grand Finals. The remaining teams then battled it out in the repechage round, whereby the winner would then advance to the Grand Finals. Both the KPMG Vikings and the Skrine Dragons won their respective heats, and HSBC was the victor in the repechage round. In the tightly-contested Grand Finals race, the KPMG Vikings emerged as champions of the Skrine Regatta.
Overall, the Skrine Regatta was a resounding success and a good time was had by all. It is Skrine's intention to make the event a yearly affair, and plans are already underway to ensure that next year's event will be bigger and better in every respect.
