SATURDAY, 4 NOVEMBER – The 4th Edition of the Skrine Regatta: Paddling for Charity, a biennial dragon boat race was recently held at Putrajaya. The charitable event raised a total sum of RM30,000.00, RM25,000.00 of which was channelled to Teach For Malaysia (“TFM”) and the remainder RM 5,000.00 to IDEAS Academy (“IDEAS”). Both TFM and IDEAS are non-profitable organisations on a mission to empower underprivileged children including refugees and undocumented students in Malaysia through education.

This year sees the biggest Skrine Regatta to-date with the participation of 8 teams comprising the Skrine Dragons, TFM, IDEAS, 3 internationally-renowned consulting firms, a Penang-based property development based and an IT service provider company. The “Small Boat Category” consisting of 10 paddlers was introduced this year to complement the standard “Big Boat Category” which consists of 18 paddlers.

About 300 supporters turned up for the event to cheer for the extremely competitive paddlers whose spirit was undampened by the slight downpour for part of the Skrine Regatta. After 7 rounds of race, the KPMG Vikings emerged as Champions of the “Big Boat Category”, wresting the highly coveted Challenge Trophy from the Skrine Dragons. The latter however managed to bring home with them the trophy for the “Small Boat Category”.

After the race, paddlers and supporters were treated to a sumptuous lunch, prepared by the Picha Project, a social enterprise founded for refugees’ families in Malaysia.
